Summary

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is increasingly recognised as a necessary component of credible net-zero pathways, particularly for addressing residual emissions from hard-to-abate sectors. This presentation explores the transition from CDR potential to deployment, examining the technologies, infrastructure, energy requirements, and financing and policy mechanisms needed to scale permanent carbon removal. Drawing on recent developments across the US, UK, EU and Australia, the talk will discuss emerging policy frameworks, and the growing role of permanent CDR within industrial decarbonisation and long-term net-zero strategies. It will also reflect on discussions from the March 2026 UNU-CPR Science-Policy Briefing in Geneva on the evolving role of CDR in climate policy and implementation. In this event, we will explore:

Speakers

Dr. Alice Evatt

Dr. Alice Evatt is an Australian research fellow at Oxford Net Zero, an initiative from University of Oxford that brings together researchers across disciplines to develop science-based, equitable approaches for achieving global net zero emissions and sustainable development. Her work focuses on assessing the credibility of net zero strategies in the fossil fuel sector. With expertise in climate ethics, climate policy, carbon management, and engineered carbon dioxide removal, she has played a key role in European carbon management policy, including leading Oxford’s contribution on EU carbon management policy and the commercial potential of carbon dioxide removal technologies as part of the EU Horizon 2020 NEGEM project. Dr. Evatt holds a PhD in Climate Ethics and Policy from the University of Oxford, and an MPhil in Political Philosophy and Climate Ethics from the University of Cambridge.
