Geothermal energy has a key role to play in combating climate change and in achieving the objectives of Canton of Geneva’s energy master plan.
In order to exploit this clean, local, and renewable energy source, the Canton of Geneva and Services Industriels de Genève (SIG) have launched the GEothermies programme (www.geothermies.ch). The aim of this programme is to map the subsoil of the Geneva basin in order to determine its geothermal potential and establish a framework conducive to its development.
The groundwater resources identified by the investigations carried out to date and those still in progress are diverse and present a number of strategic opportunities in terms of not only energy but also of drinking water, which the public authorities wish to exploit in a sustainable and coordinated manner.
Based on these encouraging results, an ambitious programme to develop the resource is underway and its first achievements are beginning to take shape.
