A global perspective on natural hydrogen exploration

Summary

Hydrogen is a promising source of clean energy with the potential to play a significant role in the global transition toward sustainability. Each kilogram of hydrogen contains approximately 2.4 times the energy of natural gas, and its only byproduct is water. Consequently, hydrogen as an energy source generates zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Currently, various types of manufactured hydrogen are available on the market, each differing significantly in terms of emissions and production costs. However, there is also a naturally occurring form of hydrogen, generated in the subsurface through geochemical processes: natural hydrogen, also referred to as geologic hydrogen or white hydrogen. Natural hydrogen is found within the Earth’s crust and can be extracted directly from the subsurface. Unlike hydrogen produced from fossil fuels or electrolysis, natural hydrogen presents a potentially low-cost, renewable, and clean energy alternative. In this presentation the current state of knowledge regarding natural hydrogen exploration will be discussed and the impact of successful exploration on the current energy landscape will be examined.

 

Dr. Mondino will explore the emerging potential of natural hydrogen, covering:

  • What is natural (or geologic) hydrogen, and how is it formed?
  • How does it compare to manufactured hydrogen in cost, sustainability, and availability?
  • Could natural hydrogen be a game-changer in the global energy transition?

Speakers

Dr. Fiammetta Mondino

Dr. Fiammetta Mondino holds a Ph.D. in Alpine Structural Geology. Following five years in the tunnelling industry, she spent over 15 years in oil and gas exploration, working with companies such as Shell and Addax Petroleum, and contributing to various projects worldwide. In 2018, she co-founded GER SA (Geneva Earth Resources), a subsurface consultancy specializing in the renewable energy sector. For the past three years, she has been an active member of Terra-A AG team, focusing on geothermal, water exploration and innovative Technology Development. For the past two years, she dedicated her activities to Natural Hydrogen Exploration in some of the most promising areas worldwide.
